Miles Coverdale Lodge sponsor donation to Torbay Hospital League of Friends

Torbay Hospital League of Friends has received cheques totalling £1,000 from Devon's Freemasons.

Georges Adroit from Torbay Hospital League of Friends said: "This is a most generous gift from the Freemasons and we are extremely grateful. Although our large projects get the most publicity, there are many, many smaller projects we get involved with, and this will go towards one or even more of those".

£750 of the total donation was part of an annual programme of charitable giving that has seen Devonshire Freemasons distribute more than £20,000 to 25 local worthy causes. Most of the recipient organisations have been nominated by a local Masonic Lodge, usually where a member has a connection with the organisation. In this case, the sponsoring lodge was Miles Coverdale Lodge, which meets in Paignton and which also donated an additional £250 directly to the League of Friends to bring total to £1,000.

The £750 donation came from the William Alexander Kneel Endowment (WAKE) Fund which is currently worth approximately £1.5million. It is a charitable fund which has been accumulated by legacies and donations from Devonshire Freemasons and their families. The donations were presented by the Provincial Grand Master of the Provincal Grand Lodge of Devonshire, R.W. Bro. Ian Kingsbury ProvGM, at the Exmouth Masonic Hall.

R.W. Bro. Ian Kingsbury ProvGM said "I am delighted that the Freemasons in Devon are able to contribute to local causes. Many of these organisations are run on a shoestring by volunteers and these donations provide real benefit and are much appreciated".

Miles Coverdale Lodge donate over £1,000 to Rowcroft Hospice

On Thursday 18 October 2012 Miles Coverdale Lodge held a charity event.  After the regular meeting was closed wives, partners and guests were welcomed into the Temple in Courtland Road, Paignton by the Master, W.Bro. Peter Perryman (pictured far right) and members.  W.Bro.  James Lang, the Charity Steward (pictured far left), gave a talk on the scope of Masonic charities.  He covered the national, provincial and individual lodge charitable activities and explained that Freemasonry under the United Grand Lodge of England is one of Britain's largest donators to charity.

James highlighted the national contribution to international (e.g. tsunami relief) and domestic good works (e.g. youth programmes); the provincial Masonic charities giving to good causes in Devon (e.g. Riding for the Disabled Torquay as proposed by the lodge); and Miles Coverdale’s giving to local good causes ranging from Age Concern Torbay to Friends of Torbay and Paignton hospitals.

Miles Coverdale present cheque to Rowcroft HospiceThe principal guests in the Temple were Sue Newman (Chair) (pictured 4th from left) and Chris Hicks (trustee) (pictured 2nd from left) both from Rowcroft Hospice.  They gave a presentation on the work of Rowcroft Hospice which supports people with progressive, life limiting conditions across South Devon and last year cared for over 1,800 local people.  We learned that, from its centre in Torquay, Rowcroft supports patients and their families across a 300 square mile area which stretches from Dartmoor to Dawlish, out as far as Bovey Tracey and Moretonhampstead.  Patients receive specialist care in the hospice’s 17 bedded inpatient unit or in  their homes, cared for by Rowcroft’s community and Hospice at Home teams.

Rowcroft has to raise over £5 million every year, of which 70% must come from the public’s generosity.  It was with great pleasure that Mrs. Jill Perryman (pictured 3rd from left) presented Sue Newman with £1,000 being the proceeds from the Ladies' Night and other lodge funds with further funds raised and presented later that evening.  It is to be hoped that, among the many calls on our giving, lodges in the Rowcroft catchment area consider the continuing needs of the Hospice movement in their area which is so dependent on public support.  This may be easier in the coming years now that our wonderful support for the Devon Festival Appeal for the Royal Masonic Trust For Girls And Boys is coming to a successful conclusion.
